Older Persons
Department of Older Persons well-being:
The aim of this department is to initiate and implement various interventions aimed at reducing poverty and other forms of injustice among older persons in rural and urban Zambia. Being an area which is under researched in Zambia and globally, the department is also created in order to intensify scientific research on ageing related issues in rural and urban Zambia and outside Zambia as a way of generating evidence-based knowledge to inform policy and practice on how to improve well-being of older persons in Zambia. The main programs in this department are:
(i) Farm the Land for Older Persons:
The aim of this program is to reduce hunger, foster food and income security, improve nutrition, and enhance independence of older persons by empowering poorest older persons with capital to cultivate their land, weed their land, provision of farming inputs and harvesting their crops.
(ii) Basic Necessities Support for Older Persons:
The aim of this program is to reduce poverty among poorest older persons in rural and urban Zambia by regularly providing basic services to older persons who are not able to fend for themselves due to their conditions such as being too old, disability and sickness among others. The services include provision of food, shelter, clothing, beddings, and medical aid.
(iii) Older Persons in National Development:
Since older persons are the tap roots of the Zambian society and fountain of wisdom, the aim of this program is to continuously educate and engage older persons on all national development issues and create the platform for them to participate in all national development activities throughout their life cycles.
(iv) 24/7 Elder Abuse Prevention Program:
Being a common and serious problem faced by older persons in Zambia, the aim of this program is to prevent occurrences of the problem of elder abuse in rural and urban Zambia by constantly being on the lookout of any signs of elder abuse and quickly intervening in the situations that can lead to elder abuse.In order to achieve this aim, we are creating local community taskforces and helplines on elder abuse prevention in every local community of rural and urban Zambia.
(v) Research on Older Persons’ Well-being:
The aim of this program is intensify scientific research on various issues that surround older person’s well-being both in Zambia and outside Zambia. This is done to generate scientific knowledge on how to improve and sustain well-being of older persons in rural and urban Zambia.
(vi) Consultancy and training:
We do consultancy work and training in ageing related issues.
