Department of Social Protection:

The aim of this department is to reduce poverty among poor and vulnerable people in rural and urban Zambia through delivery of basic social protection services to most poor and vulnerable people whether Zambians or non-Zambians and through building and strengthening existing informal and formal social protection mechanisms. The main programs in this department:

(i) Basic Needs Shield for the Less Privileged Program:

The aim of this program is consistently provide basic social protection services such as food, shelter, cash, clothing, medical aid, shelter water, withdrawal from dangerous environment, and repatriation support, among others to the most vulnerable people. In this program social protection services are provided in accordance with the dire need(s) that the particular poor and vulnerable person has.

(ii) Informal sector social protection program:

This program is aimed at building both formal and informal social protection mechanisms among different categories of informal economy workers in rural and urban Zambia.

(iii) Educational Social Protection Program:

The aim of this program is to introduce the social protection courses in all colleges and universities in Zambia as a way of developing human resources to deliver social protection services and teach social protection courses in all colleges and universities. It is also aimed at regularly conducting public lectures on social protection. This is meant to enable people in Zambia to understand the importance of having strong, reliable, comprehensive and sustainable social protection mechanisms at individual, family, local community and national levels.

(iv) Social Protection Research:

The aim of this program is to consistently undertake scientific research on social protection related issues both in Zambia and outside Zambia as a way of generating scientific knowledge to inform policy and practice on how to reduce poverty in rural and urban Zambia using social protection.  

(v) Consultancy and Training:

We also offer consultancy work and training in social protection related issues.
